Pentecost is Coming to Town

When you read that title, hear the song "Santa Claus is coming to town". People, especially kids, get so excited in anticipation of Christmas. As you may have guessed, I'm excited about Pentecost. It's this coming Sunday, May 31st! For several weeks I have been praying, asking God what He has in store for us this Pentecost.

Known widely as the birth of the church, the first Pentecost took place in Jerusalem where believers gathered as instructed by Jesus to wait for the promise of the Spirit. On that historic day they were baptized in the Holy Spirit and in fire with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

I truly believe that this Pentecost will be significant for the church as well. It cannot be a coincidence that after almost three months of COVID-19 quarantine where the church was not permitted to gather, Pentecost falls on the calendar just when we are allowed to open the church doors again. As praise and worship explodes for our Savior, as hungry hearts reach for His presence, we can expect an outpouring of His Spirit. Yes, there will be tongues of fire (zeal and fervency), but even more importantly, there will be a baptism in love and a baptism in the fear of God. God also impressed on me that this outpouring will not be a one time, one place isolated event. It will be worldwide and will continue for a season.

Kids get excited about Santa Claus because of the gifts he brings. Holy Spirit has gifts for the church that will be activated powerfully through our love for God and love for people. The gifts of the Spirit as listed in 1 Corinthians 12 will flow freely and powerfully as we embrace the fear of God. This outpouring of love will be accompanied by signs and wonders for the purpose of bringing in the harvest. It is ripe! People's hearts have been tenderized in this season of trauma. Expect to find yourself witnessing boldly. Love will propel you forward.
