The Speed of Light

The Lord has been bringing to mind the fact that we are the light of the world. As Christians, we often feel as though we have little influence on this world when in fact, we are light. We push back and limit darkness from taking over. We have no idea how far our light reaches and how effective it is. Jesus didn't call us lights without knowing that light travels very far very fast. The following is a quote from Nasa:

"Light travels at a constant, finite speed of 186,000 mi/sec. A traveler, moving at the speed of light, would circum-navigate the equator approximately 7.5 times in one second. By comparison, a traveler in a jet aircraft, moving at a ground speed of 500 mph, would cross the continental U.S. once in 4 hours."

Wow! As lights, we impact the entire world 7.5 times a second. The enemy would have us believe that we are impotent and powerless when the fact is we frustrate him at every turn.

Astronomers measure the intensity or brightness of a star by 3 criteria: how big it is, how hot it is, and how far away it is from the earth (link). Of course, Jesus was the ultimate light of the world. While our intensity is inferior to Christ's, we must not let the enemy discourage us from shining. The light we produce as individuals reaches far and gets there fast. When we are in unity with other Christians, the light becomes brighter, more intense, and reaches even farther.

This Christmas season as we gather to sing about The Light of the World, let us not forget that we are called to shine as lights in the darkness. Let's believe that our light is making a difference. Let us become as bold as little children that sing This Little of Mine. And let us be encouraged as darkness retreats! Darkness is powerless in light.

“You are the light of the world.

A city built on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.

Instead, they put it on its stand,

and it gives light to everyone in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before others,

that they may see your good deeds

and glorify your Father in heaven."

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
